Inventory with as estimated value of $500,000 was stolen the morning of May 23 from New York Jewelers, at 11 N. Wabash Ave., according to Officer Phillip Armstrong at the Chicago Police New Affairs office. Armstrong added that no suspects were in custody and the case is under investigation.

According to the Chicago Sun-Times, the robbers used a “large, movable sign” to obscure their robbery from traffic on Wabash. The Sun-Times also reports that the robbers left the first floor untouched, but ransacked the second floor, resulting in expensive watches on the ground and broken glass everywhere.

Parking garage thefts

Two vehicle break-ins and thefts occurred at the 172 W. Madison St. parking garage on the afternoon of May 23.

In a separate incident, a victim told police that an offender broke into her car window to steal an Acer laptop with an estimated value of $500. The victim told the parking garage security guard about the incident and then told the police.

The victim told police that when returning to his company vehicle, he observed the items missing from the passenger seat. The victim said he had left the driver side door unlocked and the computer was in plain view.

Identity theft

A resident in the 200 block of East Cullerton Street told police May 17 that an unknown offender used her name and social security number to acquire a lease and P.O. Box without the victim’s consent. The offender also apparently used the victim’s identity to get $433 worth of medical attention at an unknown hospital.
