Police charged Janusz Kopycinski, 30 of Chicago with reckless and disorderly conduct and also resisting arrest for his behavior outside City Hall during Mayor Richard Daley’s last day at the 121 N. LaSalle St. building.
Kopycinski allegedly yelled obscenities and spit in the area where Daley was about to exit. Witnesses and police asked the offender to calm down, when he spat in the direction of the officer and shouted obscenities at him, according to the report. The officer then asked Kopycinski to produce a valid ID at which point he turned and ran.
The officer gave chase, grabbing Kopycinski by his backpack. Kopycinski swung his arms in an attempt to break free, causing the officer to fall into the street and be struck by a CTA bus. Police were then able to take down Kopycinski and take him into custody.
Homeless man robbed
An armed robbery took place May 14 in the 100 block of South Michigan Avenue. The victim told police that several males attacked him, one of whom pointed a handgun at him, took $40 and fled on foot from the area. The victim, who is wheelchair-bound, was struck in the stomach by one of the offenders.
The victim told police he was homeless and had recently been discharged from the Roseland Community Hospital. The victim said he is acquainted with the offenders but could not provide any names at the time of the crime report.
Motor vehicle theft “chase” ends in apprehension
Police charged Sonya Douglas, 44, of Chicago, with motor vehicle theft after a failed attempt to steal a 2004 Chevy Trailblazer May 14 outside the 7-Eleven at Dearborn and Van Buren streets.
The Chevy owner told police that while at the 7-Eleven, he left the engine of his car running as he ran inside to make a purchase. He looked out and saw Douglas jump into his vehicle and slowly drive off northbound.
The car owner then ran out and chased after the vehicle, while at the same time calling 911. He caught up with the vehicle at the Dearborn and Adams intersection and started struggling with Douglas. Two officers came on to the scene and arrested Douglas — and turned the vehicle over to its owner.
Elderly woman scammed
An 87-year-old South Loop resident said that she transferred money to an unknown male she mistakenly thought to be her grandson. The victim says that a male offender called her May 11 claiming to be her grandson. He said, “I got arrested after attending a wedding in Brampton, Canada. Need you to send some money so I can get out of jail.” She was then told that a lawyer by the name of Robert Brock would contact her later.
The victim then received a call from someone claiming to be Robert Brock who said, “She needed to send $980 by Western Union,” according to police. The victim then went to the South Loop Currency Exchange to send the $980, also paying $106 in transaction fees.
Another unknown male later contacted the victim — the man gave her a number to call regarding instructions to send an additional $900. The victim then contacted the police.
Coffee shop theft
A woman was the victim of an armed robbery May 13 at the 53 E Randolph St. Intelligentsia coffee shop.
The victim told police that she sat down to drink her coffee when two males entered the establishment and walked behind her. One whispered in her ear and said, “Hands up!” The victim then turned around and noticed the offender’s right hand in his jacket — and a bulge protruding from his right jacket pocket.
The offender then took the iPhone that was lying on the table in front of her. Both offenders then exited the establishment and ran away in an unknown direction.
This summary contains information taken from the arrest records from the 1st District of the Chicago Police Department. Anyone named has only been charged with a crime. The cases have not yet been adjudicated.
