A first-degree murder took place sometime between the evening of May 5 and morning of May 6 at Wabash Food & Liquor, 234 S. Wabash Ave. The victim, 57-year-old Edward Jernagin, was the store’s nighttime clerk. No suspects have been identified.

A store employee arrived at work the morning of May 6 to discover the store’s security gate open and the front door locked. The employee than called the nighttime clerk — who was responsible for securing the premises the night before — and received no response.

About thirty minutes later, the store manager arrived, unlocked the door and entered the store, accompanied by the employee. The manager discovered Jernagin in the store’s back office lying motionless, facedown, with an apparent gunshot wound to his head. The manager told the store employee who proceeded to call 911.

The manager and employee told police that the store’s safe was opened and empty. Jernagin had an empty cell phone holster on his person and it was determined that his keys were missing, including keys for the store and his vehicle. The car, though, was still parked in the parking lot the Jernagin had left it in.

Robbery on train platform

On May 4, a passenger exiting a train at Union Station, 210 S. Canal St., was victim of an armed robbery. The victim told police that two offenders robbed him on the platform — One of the offenders had a black gun and said, “Give it up pops.” The offenders took the victim’s wallet, which included identification and $45.

CTA train robberies

Four teens — ages 14, 15, 16, and 17 — are in custody after allegedly stealing an iPhone on a CTA Red Line train May 7.

A victim and witness told police that four black male teenagers took the victim’s iPhone at the Jackson Red Line station, at 230 S. State St., and fled on foot. The victim gave chase and a witness was able to briefly detain one offender.

Police then toured the area with the victim and witness, who pointed police to four males walking south on Plymouth Court as the perpetrators. Police were able to detain the offenders.

In a separate incident May 4, a 16-year-old suspect is in custody for a strong-arm robbery on a CTA Green Line train.

The victim told police that he observed eight unknown males enter the southbound green line train at 22 E. Roosevelt Rd. through emergency doors. The suspect then grabbed the victim’s cell phone and handed it off to an accomplice. The victim, though, was able to tackle the offender — and the offender then punched the victim in the mouth, causing swelling. Police were then able to place the offender into custody.

Threat to religious organization

A death threat was called in to the St. Jude League Claretian, a Catholic organization, May 6. A Claretian employee told police that he received a voice message via his telephone that sated, “You will die night — I will blow up your house.” No suspects have been identified.

This summary contains information taken from the arrest records from the 1st District of the Chicago Police Department. Anyone named has only been charged with a crime. The cases have not yet been adjudicated.

JZ, when the police radio an apb, they say the race, description, clothing, and are as specific. While I appreciate your sensitivity to ethnicity identifies, I for one wish the medial would be far more specific in its identification of offenders. Give race, clothing, tatoos, identifying features, hell, baseball hat worn. That way the rest of us would know to put our cell phones away when matching individuals get on the train. Your insinuation that Chicago Journal is somehow racist is wrong.

Once again you mention the race of suspects in a crime that has NOTHING to do with their race. http://newsbusters.org/blogs/warner-todd-huston/2008/05/10/spj-suggests-omitting-race-crime-reporting Please knock it off.
