Two offenders — one with an Uzi submachine gun — took thousands of dollars worth of jewelry from three Greektown restaurant patrons on April 3.

The three victims told police that they had just left a restaurant and were in a car on the 300 block of South Desplaines Street when a dark blue Dodge Caravan pulled up in front of them.

The three men in the Caravan ordered the victims out of the vehicle and started taking the victim’s property, included three sets of diamond earrings, each valued at $8,000. One offender had an Uzi machine with the clip attached. After the robbery, the offenders fled southbound on Desplaines Street.

Convenience store armed robbery

An armed robbery made off with all the cash from the Mini Mart at 516 W. Harrison St. the afternoon of March 31.

The clerk said that the offender picked up a few items in the store, then walked up to the clerk, pulled out a blue steel 9 mm weapon, and said, “Put all the money in the bag now.”

The offender then put his bag down on the countertop and the clerk gave the offender all the money in the cash register. The offender then fled westbound on Harrison. The store’s clerk said she does not know how much cash was in the register.

Apartment ambush

A man was attacked and robbed in his own apartment near the intersection of Roosevelt Road and State Street on March 26.

The resident told police that upon returning to his apartment, he saw the offender in the hallway brandishing a knife. The offender then ordered the victim to keep quiet and go into his apartment. Then the robber tied the victim’s hands together at the wrist and made him lie down.

The robber took $300 from the victim’s wallet, as well as his credit card and cell phone. The offender next took $100 from the apartment and fled out the front door in an unknown direction.

The victim freed himself from being tied and went to the Jewel across the street to call police. There are surveillance cameras in the building, but the crime report provided had yet to get added information from surveillance footage.

Assault at the club

A patron of the Velvet Lounge, at the intersection of Cermak Road and Michigan Avenue, was attacked in the early morning hours of March 27.

The victim accused of Santara Minor, 29 of Chicago, of initiating a verbal altercation and then striking her in the face with a high heel shoe. The victim said that Minor and two other club patrons began to punch her with closed fists and kick her until she fell on the floor. While lying on the floor, the attackers continued to kick her and Minor allegedly twice bit her.

Security guards broke up the fight, and the victim subsequently refused medical attention. It is not clear what, if anything, provoked the violent attack: the crime report listed no prior relationship between Minor and the victim.

Truck theft

A truck owned by Atomatic Mechanical Services — a heating and cooling mechanics service company in Arlington Heights — was stolen from a South Loop parking garage March 28. The 2006 Ford Econoline was reported missing from the parking garage at 910 S. Michigan Ave.

Pickup basketball thefts

Two patrons of the L.A. Fitness athletic club at 1121 S. Canal St. were victims of theft last week.

A gym patron told police that on March 30 he removed his warm-up pants to play basketball and said that his pants pockets had a $600 Android phone. The victim said that when he retrieved his pants, the phone was missing.

In a separate incident, a man didn’t lock his gym locker and returned from a pick-up basketball game to find his wallet, $300 iPhone, and $180 pair of Michael Jordan sneakers stolen.

Police described the theft as, “an ongoing problem at athletic clubs.” Police were informed there are no surveillance cameras located at L.A. Fitness.

This summary contains information taken from the arrest records from the 18th District of the Chicago Police Department. Anyone named has only been charged with a crime. The cases have not yet been adjudicated.
