Burglar takes tools

A man returned to his home in the 1100 block of W. Cullerton Feb. 8 at 3:20 p.m. and discovered that someone had forcibly entered it through a window and removed an air compressor and a saw valued at $700.
Battered about beer
A man was walking near the 200 block of S. Western Feb. 6 at 10:15 p.m. when another man approached and asked him if he could buy him some beer. The first man said no, and the other guy hit him with a bottle across the head. The offender then fled. The victim was transported to Mt. Sinai Hospital with a laceration to the right side of his head. Police toured the area, but did not locate the offender.
Mass mace downtown
A clerk for a retail store asked two men he suspected of shoplifting to leave his store, located in the 100 block of N. State Feb. 3 at 5:05 p.m. One of the men pulled out what the clerk suspected was mace and sprayed it in the clerk’s face. The offender then started spraying other people in the store. The offenders fled. Police arrived and found other victims, who claimed the men sprayed them on the sidewalk near the store on State. Approximately two hours later, another employee for the store recovered a wallet containing identification for one of the offenders. Police were investigating the lead at the time of the report and no charges had been filed.
Graffiti artist caught on tap
A resident of a condo building located on the 100 block of N. Wabash discovered a graffiti logo painted on the sidewalk in front of his building and a similar logo etched in the woodwork near the building elevator Feb. 3 at 9 p.m. The resident reviewed security tapes and found a tape of the spray painting incident and reported it to police. The condo board president is now working with other residents of the building to identify the offender.
Beggar begs, batters cop
A man was panhandling in the 300 block of S. State Feb. 8 at 8:40 p.m. A police officer in civilian dress approached the man to conduct a field interview, and the panhandler asked him for money. The officer identified himself and started to ask the panhandler questions. The panhandler told the officer to, “mind his business.” The officer signaled for back-up, and as the officers tried to place the panhandler under arrest, he punched one of the officers in the chest. The officers eventually secured the man and transported him to the 1st District police station for processing.
Nothing taken
A man returned to his home located in the 1400 block of S. Federal Feb. 6 at 10:35 p.m. and found both of his patio doors open and the handle on one of the doors on the floor. No offenders were found on the scene and nothing seemed to be missing. The owner said both patio doors had definitely been locked before he left the house.
Thief returns wallet
A woman was walking near the 1100 block of S. State Feb. 5 at 5:20 a.m. when a man approached, pushed her up against a wall and started rifling through her purse. The man took out her wallet, and started to walk away. The woman asked if the offender could take the money and return the wallet. The offender removed $18 and fled. The victim then went to work and reported the incident.
Pickpocket caught on camera
A woman was dining at a restaurant located in the 100 block of E. Randolph Jan. 29 at 1:50 p.m. and put her purse on the back of her chair. When she turned to retrieve the purse a few minutes later it was gone. She told restaurant management, who reviewed security tape showing a man taking the purse, concealing it in a bag and walking out of the restaurant. The manager turned the footage over to police where members of the 1st District pickpocket team recognized and identified the offender. The victim was advised to cancel her credit cards, and officers are investigating.
Coffee shop robbed
A man walked into a coffee shop located in the 100 block of E. Madison Jan. 26 at 5:55 a.m., went behind the counter, pushed the cashier away from the register and said, “Give me the f— money.” The cashier and another employee complied and helped the offender fill his bag with $300. The offender fled, and was not located by police.
