An ATM machine at Hyatt Regency McCormick place, 2233 S. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Drive, is missing $26,000. An employee of the armored car service Pendum Inc. noticed the missing money during a cash load Jan. 20 and told the Minnesota-based firm Transaction Systems that operates the ATM.
Last week, an employee for Transaction Systems notified Chicago Police about the lost money. The employee said that Pendum Inc. personnel have exclusive access to this particular ATM.
Rude awakening
A CTA rider said he fell asleep on an early morning train Jan. 30 going through the South Loop and woke up to found to his front pockets cut and valuables missing. The victim reported to police that his wallet with $29, his drivers license and credit cars were stolen. An iPhone 4 was also swiped.
Stealing people’s mail
Police arrested an 18-year-old man Feb. 4 for allegedly stealing a bundle of mail at University Center — a residency house that caters to college students — at 525 S. State St.
A U.S. Postal Service carrier said he came to make a delivery at University Center and left a bundle of mail on the counter, then went to the other side of the room to retrieve other mail. When he returned, the mail was gone, which he reported to the University Center’s head of security.
The security chief then spotted the suspect on the Center’s surveillance camera walking away with the mail. He proceeded to the suspect’s room in the Center and spoke to him. The suspect told security he simply took the mail because it was sitting there, opened it in his room, and then threw it away. Security then recovered the mail from the trash.
Identity theft leads to Home Depot shopping spree
A South Loop resident told police on Jan. 31 that she received a bill for $502.29 on her Home Depot charge account for a purchase at a Canton, Calif. Home Depot in December. The only problem, the victim said, was that she had never been to California. She claimed she had possession of her charge card at all times, and had not used her card nor permitted anyone else to use it.
Thefts from vehicles
On the night of Jan. 31, there were two break-ins reported to cars parked at South Loop Whole Foods, 1101 S. Canal St., with each resulting in stolen computers.
In the first incident, the victim returned to his vehicle at 6 p.m. and discovered that his car’s rear passenger window had been broken and that his backpack containing a laptop was taken.
In the second break-in, the victim returned his vehicle at 8 p.m. and found that his shopping bag with personal items was gone, including a Panasonic computer with an estimated value of $2,000.
This summary contains information taken from the arrest records from the 1st District of the Chicago Police Department. Anyone named has only been charged with a crime. The cases have not yet been adjudicated.
