A man exited the elevator in his residential building located in the 800 block of S. Wells Jan. 19 at 6:45 a.m. and heard the door to his apartment slam. He ran down the hall past his apartment into a nearby stairwell and saw a man fleeing down the stairs. The man returned to his apartment where his girlfriend was sleeping and found $10 cash, which had been sitting on the kitchen counter, as well as a tan Coach wallet containing $35 and miscellaneous credit cards, missing. Police did not find the offender.
Rob a bank? Nah.
An employee at a bank located in the 1100 block of S. Canal was using the ATM in the vestibule of the bank Jan. 15 at 6:30 p.m. when a man in a black skull cap and mask stepped inside and pulled out a chrome handgun. The offender made eye contact with the employee, turned around and then exited the building without saying a word. The employee went inside the bank, informed his manager and called 911, the police report said.
Man asks for change, pulls gun
A man was standing in the 500 block of S. Desplaines Jan. 21 at 11:55 p.m. smoking a cigarette when he was approached by a man in a camouflage jacket who asked him if he wanted to buy some marijuana. The smoker declined and walked to a nearby White Hen Pantry. After he left, the camo-clad man approached him again and asked for change for $10. The victim pulled out his wallet and handed the man two $5 bills, but the offender then reached in to his backpack and pulled out a .22 caliber pistol and said, “Give me all your money.” The victim gave the man $20 and the offender fled. The victim chased the man, but could not keep up with him. Police toured the area, but could not locate the man.
Domestic dispute leads to theft
A woman told police that on Jan. 21 her boyfriend poured liquor over her head at a bar and made verbal threats to enter her apartment and steal her stuff. On Jan. 22 she returned home to her apartment located on the 300 block of E. South Water and found the boyfriend had made a spare key and removed two pairs of her designer shoes, one pair of boots, an Apple iPod and a bottle of cologne. Total value: $3,000. Police advised the victim to get a warrant of protection, and are investigating the incident. The girlfriend told police the offender had a gun at his residence.
Cop avoids a kick in the balls
Police were transporting a criminal to the 1st District police station located in the 1700 block of S. State on Jan. 23 at 2:49 a.m. While one of the transporting officers was writing a booking number on the offender’s hand, she stiffened her wrist, attempted to pull away and then tried to kick the male officer in his genital area with her heel. Nearby officers detained the woman and turned her over to the central detention area.
Phone theft foiled
A woman was getting off a CTA train with some friends near the 100 block of N. State Jan. 24 at 1:36 p.m. when a man approached and tried to grab her phone. The victim and offender fell to the ground and out of the train. The offender fled. Police arrived and a witness told police he knew the offender and gave them his contact information.
Woman mugged near bus
A woman was exiting a bus in the 200 block of S. Canal Jan. 24 at 12:25 p.m. when she was punched in the shoulder from behind by an unknown offender. The offender then took the woman’s wallet and fled south on Canal. Police could not locate the offender.
Men throw gang signs, ram car
Two men were waiting in their car near 100 S. Lake Shore Dr. on Jan. 15 at 3 p.m. for a red light to change when another vehicle pulled up and two other men started “throwing up gang signs,” a police report says, and shouting obscenities. The gang sign throwing men then rammed the other men’s car with theirs. The victims attempted to flee and their car spun sideways and hit a curb. The offenders fled north on Lake Shore in their car and exited at Irving Park according to a witness who followed the offenders in his car. Police toured the area, but did not locate the offenders.
