Burglars take big haul

A couple went to a party and then returned to their home in the 1300 block of W. Washburne a few hours later at 7 p.m. on Jan. 14 and found the front door unlocked. When they walked in, two men brandished guns and told them to get on the floor face down and not to look up. The men took a wallet, a pair of jeans and $5,300 cash and fled. Police arrived and the victims told police the offenders used gloves during the robbery.

Electronics stolen in burglary

A woman returned to her home on the 2100 block of W. Monroe Jan. 13 at 5:56 p.m. and found that her door had been forced open. She surveyed the place and found that two plasma screen televisions, a stereo system and a Nintendo Wii game system were missing.

Purse snatched at knife-point

A woman was walking home near the 1800 block of S. Canalport Jan. 14 at 2:15 a.m. when a man approached, brandished a small knife and demanded the woman give him her purse. The woman did and the man fled. A passing cab driver gave the woman a ride home and she called police. She said the purse had nothing of value in it.

An espresso and a robbery

A man wearing a black hat, black scarf and a silver coat entered a coffee shop located in the 100 block of E. Washington Jan. 10 at 6:45 a.m. and asked how much an espresso would cost. The woman at the cash register said $3.50. The man said he wanted something cheaper, and then added, “Give me all your money, the bills and the change. I’m not playing with you. I have a gun.” The cashier gave the offender $260 and he fled east on Madison. Police requested security footage from the scene for their investigation.

Cell phone snatched

A woman was talking on her cell phone near the 500 block of W. Washington Jan. 11 at 5:13 p.m. when a man snatched the phone from her hand and fled. Four witnesses gave chase and apprehended the offender a block away. Police arrived, arrested the man and charged him with attempted theft.

Why can’t we be friends?

Two female best friends started yelling at each other on New Year’s Eve at 11:40 p.m. in the 200 block of N. Michigan. One of the women shoved and scratched the other on the neck, causing a small laceration. Police radioed for an ambulance and the woman was treated on the scene. The victim decided not to press charges and said that she would “go and sleep it off.”

Babbling bandit strikes

A man was riding a CTA Blue Line train near the 100 block of N. Dearborn Jan. 14 at 4:45 p.m. when another man sat next to him, implied he had a gun and said, “Give it up now.” The victim, fearing for his life, reached in his pockets and removed $45 and gave it to the man. The offender then continued to sit in his seat for a couple more stops while talking to himself before he fled the train at Lake. Police toured the area, but did not locate the offender.

Shakedown

A man was standing by a hot dog stand near an aquarium in the 1200 block of S. Lake Shore Jan. 17 at 1 p.m. when another man approached and aggressively asked him to buy a newspaper. The newspaper hawker then stuck his hands in his pocket and said, “Give me your money or I will shoot you.” The victim took out his wallet and gave the offender $600. The offender fled. Police toured the area, but did not locate the victim.

The weed man busted

Officers riding a CTA bus near 1100 block of S. Michigan Jan. 16 at 9:40 p.m. smelled the strong odor of cannabis emanating from a passenger. They approached the man to conduct a field interview and he handed them a bag containing a green leafy substance suspected as cannabis. The officers attempted to place the man under arrest, but he refused to comply with verbal commands, so an officer pulled out his taser. The offender spun around, opened a window and threw another baggie from his coat out the window. A struggle ensued and the officer, with the help of a witness, handcuffed the offender and transported him to the 1st District police station.
