Connecting communities - and community groups, maybe

Last week, we ran a story about former University Village Association Executive Director Dennis O’Neill and his new community group, Connecting4Communities. Though we called UVA founder Oscar D’Angelo for comment, our schedules conflicted and we couldn’t get in touch with him in time for our story. However, after we put the paper to bed last week, D’Angelo faxed us over a copy of a letter that he had sent to O’Neill. In it, he congratulated the UVA’s former head and wished him well in his new venture — but managed to sneak in a jab or two. Read more...

UIC surgeons break surgical ground

Robotic surgery to remove a gallbladder via a single port was performed for the first time in the Midwest recently by surgeons at the University of Illinois at Chicago. Gallbladder surgery using this method involves a single incision instead of multiple cuts and less scarring, according to Dr. Enrico Benedetti, head of the department of surgery at UIC.

Hull House organization shutting down

Jane Addams Hull House, the charitable organization founded on the Near West Side, announced last week that it’s shutting down. According to Crain’s Chicago Business, the organization is closing after more than 120 years because they “can’t make the math work,” Crain’s quoted Hull House’s board chairman Stephen Saunders as saying.
