Chicago architect Jeanne Gang, who designed one of New Eastside’s most distinctive high rises, has received one of the MacArthur Foundation’s illustrious “genius” grants.
Gang’s 82-story skyscraper, Aqua, stands out amongst its glass-and-steel brethren with a series of undulating balconies on each floor that give the appearance of a fluid shape. She also designed Columbia College’s new media production center.
With the MacArthur fellowship, Gang will receive $500,000 in no-strings-attached funding over the next five years.
“An emerging talent with a diverse and growing body of work, Gang is setting a new industry standard through her effective synthesis of conventional materials, striking composition, and ecologically sustainable technology,” the MacArthur Foundation wrote on its website.
As with all MacArthur fellows, Gang was called out of the blue and told she had received the award.
