A baby white-sided dolphin was born at the Shedd Aquarium Friday morning.
Shortly after the 8:47 a.m. birth, the calf swam to the surface, took its first breath and began to swim around the Secluded Bay. Aquarium officials said both the calf, whose sex has not been determined yet, and mom Tique are doing well.
The pregnancy was a result of a partnership between Shedd and the Miami Seaquarium. Tique returned from Miami last summer pregnant, and the father is Li’i, a male dolphin at the Seaquarium.
Late last month, the Brookfield Zoo announced that one of its dolphins, 29-year-old Tapeko, is pregnant and will give birth in the fall.
