Four students from South Loop Elementary School were awarded for their science fair projects at a Jan. 29 regional competition that saw more than 90 entries from more than 30 institutions in the Chicago Public Schools system.

Samantha Cousino and Renee Jacoby both turned in first-place projects in the botany and behavioral sciences division, respectively. Jacoby also earned the top overall score for the competition. South Loop student Anna Griffith took second place in the microbiology division while Sabrina Mendoza earned an honorable mention for her biochemistry project.

Cousino and Jacoby will now compete in the citywide competition scheduled for March 18-21 at the Museum of Science and Industry.

“To have all four win awards and to advance two students to the citywide competition is a tremendous result,” said South Loop science teacher Jon Proctor in a press statement.

The South Loop students’ entries in the regional fair were reviewed by judges from Northwestern, Loyola and National Louis University, as well as The Nature Museum and T-Mobile.
