City Winery construction underway
01/11/2012 10:00 PM
City Winery, the New York-based urban winemaker/restaurant/entertainment venue has started construction on its West Loop outpost and is planning to open its doors in 2012, according to a press release.
They finished off the paperwork to buy their 28,000-square-foot warehouse at 1200 W. Randolph St. in December, the release said. They’re planning to add a 5,000 foot addition, as well.
Founded by Michael Dorf in 2008, Chicago is City Winery’s second location. Dorf was originally targeting the Sullivan Center at State and Madison streets in the Loop proper, also known as the former Carson Pirie Scott building. That plan fell through, though, when Target decided it needed the space for its new downtown store.
So Dorf decided to buy a space instead in the West Loop, where he’d have more flexibility to make wine and host events.
The new City Winery will hire 90 employees, the release claims. Inside the converted warehouse, they’ll serve lunch and dinner, offer over 200 concerts a year, and host hundreds of private events and parties, the release says.
