St. Malachy teacher Zack Ruelas, 27, honored as one of Chicago area’s best

It started like any other day for Zack Ruelas, as he took his post at the front of his third grade classroom at the Near West Side’s St. Malachy School. But when he saw his mom, sister, girlfriend and a TV camera barge into his classroom a little before 10 a.m., he realized that his day was going to be very different. That’s because on Thursday, 27-year-old Ruelas learned he had won the Golden Apple Award, given out annually to 10 outstanding teachers in the Chicago area.

“There was a farmer who had a dog and Bingo was his name-o!” Meet Bingo, a loveable 1-year-old Lab/Hound mix. This country boy came to PAWS Chicago from the farm fields of rural Oklahoma. Poor Bingo was missing an ear and had bb gun pellets lodged in his thigh. PAWS Chicago veterinarians were able to remove the pellets and also neutered, vaccinated, and micro chipped him for identification. Although he only has one ear, Bingo is in great health and has normal hearing. This social guy loves people and other dogs, and thrives on plenty of exercise and playtime. Now all he needs to start his new life in Chicago is a loving family!

Naked prisoner flees down Michigan

A naked prisoner escaped from his guard at the Mercy Hospital emergency room Tuesday, May 1, and was chased down South Michigan Avenue at 3:45 p.m. before being captured outside Rogers Auto group at 2720 S. Michigan Ave.

The concept, couch surfing, isn’t new. The Chicago Office of Emergency Management and Communications will receive minute-by-minute updates from the NATO host committee as well as from area police, fire, traffic and aviation agencies throughout the event on and preceding May 20 and 21.

Plants' owner decides running Fisk and Crawford no longer economically feasible

Pilsen and Little Village’s coal-fired power plants are pulling the plug this September, months and years, respectively, before they were scheduled to do so. Fisk in Pilsen was originally scheduled to close by the end of 2012, while Crawford in Little Village was to close by the end of 2014 under an agreement brokered by Mayor Rahm Emanuel and the plants’ owner, Midwest Generation.

Ride home after being robbed

A 25-year-old Chicago man told police he was robbed on Friday, April 27 outside the Cactus Bar, 404 S. Wells St., by two men in a black Range Rover who eventually drove him home. The man told police he was at the bar with his girlfriend and first noticed the men in the Range Rover when he went outside to call a cab for his girlfriend to go home. He said he then went back in the bar to have a couple more drinks.
