The Battle of Fort Dearborn Park will be inaugurated Saturday, Aug. 15, from 10 to11 a.m. American Indians, battle descendants, War of 1812 re-enactors, historians, National Guardsmen, park district representatives and elected officials will assemble to dedicate the park and place a historic marker to commemorate the site for its significance in Chicago’s history. The Chicago Park District Board of Commissioners was expected to vote Aug. 12 to approve a $110 million, four-year intergovernmental agreement to build the Chicago Gateway Harbor on the Near North Side and the 31st Street Harbor, which is adjacent to the Douglas, Kenwood and Oakland neighborhoods. Mark Kieras was drawn to purchase a home in the Prairie District six years ago because of its past. Prairie Avenue south of 18th Street still featured some of the mansions inhabited by turn-of-the-century captains of industry and was lined by graceful, mature trees. Kieras liked that.
