A contractor for East-West University is demolishing buildings at 825 S. Wabash and 831 S. Wabash, two structures the school says are a safety hazard.
“There was a little concern because they were vacant, decrepit and boarded up,” said East-West’s director of public affairs John Thomas. “There was concern about safety … Some people had broken in, so we decided to have them taken down.”
Thomas said cost did not play a factor in the school’s decision.
East-West purchased the structures from Johnson Publishing Co. last year.
The school owns the Loftorium Building, immediately north of 825 S. Wabash, using it for administrative offices, as well as a few classrooms.
Thomas said East-West would like to eventually expand south over the two parcels where the buildings are being demolished. There are no specific plans, however.
