Bank robbed in South Loop Jewel

The TCF bank located within the Jewel-Osco store at 1224 S. Wabash Ave. was reported robbed at 5:15 p.m. Saturday, May 12. A 22-year-old teller at the bank reported that a man was waiting at the TCF counter for assistance when she approached the counter. He then showed her a note handwritten on a piece of cardboard that said “Put all your money in the bag, I have a gun.” He then placed a plastic brown bag on the counter.

On South Wabash Avenue near 15th Street, the train noise is nearly constant. Amtrak trains rumble past the building’s left during early mornings and evenings, and freight trains occasionally crawl past it. But most of the noise comes from the ‘L’ tracks behind it. The Orange and Green lines ride past it every other minute during rush hour, and about every 5 to 10 minutes during off-peak hours. The sound of the wheels echoes off every metal surface.

In a windowless classroom on the bottom floor of the Adler Planetarium, about a half-dozen people sat huddled around a table. Sprawled across the table in front of them between MacBook Pros were the remains of a dissected lime green Nokia cell phone, several tubs of wiring, computer chips, batteries — and a heart rate monitor.

Plush finally closes doors in wake of controversy

'Restaurant that acts like a nightclub' sells out to family-oriented pizzeria

After a year and a half of tense battles with its neighbors and community groups, Plush, the controversial “restaurant that acts like a nightclub,” is closed, and a pizzeria will soon replace it. The restaurant at 1104 W. Madison St. had a going-out-of-business bash last weekend before voluntarily surrendering its liquor license this week. The business was formally closed on May 15, according to a sign on the front door from the city’s Department of Business Affairs and Consumer Protection.

St. Malachy teacher Zack Ruelas, 27, honored as one of Chicago area’s best

It started like any other day for Zack Ruelas, as he took his post at the front of his third grade classroom at the Near West Side’s St. Malachy School. But when he saw his mom, sister, girlfriend and a TV camera barge into his classroom a little before 10 a.m., he realized that his day was going to be very different. That’s because on Thursday, 27-year-old Ruelas learned he had won the Golden Apple Award, given out annually to 10 outstanding teachers in the Chicago area.

“There was a farmer who had a dog and Bingo was his name-o!” Meet Bingo, a loveable 1-year-old Lab/Hound mix. This country boy came to PAWS Chicago from the farm fields of rural Oklahoma. Poor Bingo was missing an ear and had bb gun pellets lodged in his thigh. PAWS Chicago veterinarians were able to remove the pellets and also neutered, vaccinated, and micro chipped him for identification. Although he only has one ear, Bingo is in great health and has normal hearing. This social guy loves people and other dogs, and thrives on plenty of exercise and playtime. Now all he needs to start his new life in Chicago is a loving family!

Naked prisoner flees down Michigan

A naked prisoner escaped from his guard at the Mercy Hospital emergency room Tuesday, May 1, and was chased down South Michigan Avenue at 3:45 p.m. before being captured outside Rogers Auto group at 2720 S. Michigan Ave.
