Farmer's market starts Sunday
07/01/2009 10:00 PM
The Neighbors’ Development Network will debut a new farmer’s market Sunday, July 5 at Ellen Gates Starr Park, according to a press statement from the organization.
Promising locally grown produce, pastries and coffee, the market will run Sundays from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. until October.
Neighbors’ Development Network held its first public meeting earlier this year.
Members of the group collected some 1,100 signatures backing a Pete’s Fresh Market grocery at the southeast corner of Madison and Western.
Pete’s, along with Jewel-Osco and Food4Less, are interested in developing a store on the vacant parcel.
The group describes itself in the press statement as dedicated to the “revitalization of the Near West Side” and working on a variety of issues, including schools, crime and retail development, among others.
The market is also sponsored by the Ellen Gates Starr Park Advisory Council.

I heard that the Alderman didn't have much to do with it. I wish we could give him credit. It would be nice to have an Alderman who cared. Is that even possible?

I think we should also thank the alderman for all off his hard work in helping to bring such wonderful amenities as the farmers market to the area.

I know your comment was supposed to be snarky...but I would have been at the market, had I not been out of town. I'm glad the alderman was there and he was at the CAPs meeting last night as well. Kudos and points for participation.

Surprised you weren't there. Your alderman was.

I'm glad to hear it went so well. I wasn't able to be there last Sunday, but will be there this Sunday. For those of you from NDN, please bring flyers to your CAPS meetings. Some folks at mine last night didn't know about it and were thrilled that there is a Farmer's Market in the neighborhood.

The Sunday Market launched successfully, thanks to the GREAT turnout from community members! What a way to kick things off--there was a good sized group for most of the day, purchasing produce and indulging in French pastries. Even better was the sense of community and coming together that was fostered. PLEASE continue to make The Sunday Market part of your weekend. And for those of you who didn't make it, we're waiting for you!
