Aldermen approved official historic landmark status for the Viceroy Hotel, 1519-21 W. Warren, at the May 12 council meeting. The building, which was finished in 1930, is studded with terra cotta ornamentation on its façade.
Currently empty, a non-profit development team selected by the city last year has estimated it will spend some $18 million to develop 90 units of single-room-occupancy housing with supportive services in the building.
Heartland Housing and First Baptist Congregational Church were designated by the city’s Community Development Commission to develop the project.
