Caitlin R. Bennett, of the 9800 block of South Damen Avenue, added to her troubles after trying to escape from a police station on the morning of Jan. 29.

While being transported from a lock-up area at the 1st District police station at 1708 S. State St. after being arrested for a bail bond violation for other charges, Bennett, 22, reportedly struck a detention aide in the head and pulled a fire alarm in the facility in an attempt to make her escape.

Bennett was apprehended before she could get out of the building, and officers brought her back to the lock-up area. According to the report, Bennett damaged the fire alarm unit.

On the afternoon of Jan. 30, police responded to a call of a suspicious package at the Israeli Consulate, 500 W. Madison St.

Upon arrival, officers spoke with the consulate’s director of security, who said that an employee had received the package earlier that day and recognized the handwriting on the front from previous packages that had been sent to the consulate and thought to be suspicious.

The package, postmarked from a Scottsdale, N.Y. address, had been sent to the consulate’s previous location at 111 E. Wacker Drive and forwarded to the West Loop. The employee noted that package had a small tear next to the stamp. Officers called in a hazardous materials unit to investigate the package, which was subsequently turned over to FBI agents. The contents of the package were not known at the time of the police report.

An employee at a law firm on the 100 block of West Wacker Drive told police that an unknown man who looked to be in his late 30s entered the office on the morning of Jan. 30 and said he was looking for an attorney named Dorothy.

The worker told the man that no one by that name worked at the firm and asked him to leave. She later told police that the situation seemed suspicious because she believed that the door to the office had been locked at the time and that the man was not cleared to be in the building.

A 31-year-old woman told police that a man believed to be in his late 20s punched out the rear view mirror of her Mazda sedan following a road rage incident on the afternoon of Jan. 29. The victim said that she was unable to get the offender’s license plate number. The incident occurred on the 200 block of South Franklin Street.

Police picked up a man on suspicion of attempting to use a counterfeit check at a bank on Jan. 27. That afternoon, the 34-year-old man entered an M&T Bank at 79 E. Madison St. and attempted to cash a check for $2,450. While processing the order, the teller realized that the check was a counterfeit, at which point the bank contacted police. Officers arrived shortly after and arrested the suspect, who stated that he had received the check in the mail after applying for a job online. The suspect was later released without charges.

A man told police that he was threatened by an acquaintance at the Harold Washington Library, 400 S. State St., on the morning of Jan. 27.

The man stated that the suspect had threatened him with physical violence because he blamed the man for his previous arrest. According to the report, the offender, 55, had been charged with a violation for assaulting the victim.

The man said that he had tried to call police at the time of the incident but was unable to get phone reception in the library.
