Patti, Max and Adam with their vintage BMW cruiser.

Call it catlike senses if you want. When I hear rock n' roll music and smell hops and barbecue, I have a pretty good idea there's a party going on. Of course, in the interest of journalism, I'm compelled to investigate.

The music is by London Calling, a Clash cover band. And, the party will be going on until 7 p.m. tonight at Ace Motorcycle & Scooter Co., 1042 W. Jackson. The West Loop motorcycle outfitter is hosting Actoberfest 2012.

"It's basically a celebration of motorcycles," said Larry Fletcher. "We expect about 1,000 people to come by throughout the day."

Fletcher and Martin Cimek are the brains behind Steel Toe Press, a Chicago-based group whose goal is to keep the vintage motorcycle community thriving.

Whether you're a motorcycle enthusiast or an admirer of all things vintage, Actoberfest certainly has some interesting-looking foreign and domestic bikes on display. One that caught my eye was a 1971 military-grade BMW, guarded, more or less, by Max, a fatigue-clad Chihuahua-Dachsund rescue dog.
