The Curbed Awards for 2011 Buildings are out. Four of them. And the South Loop has two on the list. One is commendable and wonderful. The Best New High-Rise is Roosevelt University's new blue vertical campus at 425 S. Wabash. It definitely stands out in all its blue glory, although I've heard from some South Loopers that they're not crazy about the way the university has placed its name at the top. Cheapens it a bit, perhaps?
The South Loop also contains another of the awardees: Biggest Failure. That's the One Museum Park West Tower at Roosevelt and Indiana. That building, which should be doing gangbusters--great new high-rise in a great neighborhood with a great view--is instead in foreclosure
The model of the building at the right is pictured at the Museum Park Sales Center, which, with nothing more to do at the complex what with the buildings and townhouses either being sold out or having their own model apartments within, and with the last building in foreclosure, was just torn down. A lot of neighbors, such as my friend Anita--who lives at Museum Park--are wondering what will become of the footprint
upon which the center stood.
