Tribute to the now late Tribute
after all the troubles, there's one last trouble
12/05/2011 9:35 PM
The Tribute owners say it's been the economy. They just couldn't battle hard times.
I was only there once for a real meal and everything was great--the food, the service and the ambience. So it must be something beyond the control of the restaurant--like the hard times.
Maybe part of the trouble is the fact that I was only there once. (Although I was thinking of going today; and maybe NYE.) Too many of us didn't go back during the restaurant's five months in business. We should have gone back. And back. And back.
I should have gone more. There was no reason not to. Everything was lovely. And the view out onto the 800 block of South Michigan Avenue--and across to Grant Park--was great. I should have at least gone to relax on the big orange tilted chair/couches they had in the bar--right in the window. What a comfortable site they were.
I followed the saga of Tribute from the beginning, when I heard the restaurant was coming, through the troubles--the first chef's death, the second one's trip to rehab; the third one leaving suddenly and replaced by yet a fourth. And now I am marking its end.

Here's the latest: passed by Tribute yesterday and a sign in the window now says it's "Closed for Kitchen Repairs."

I, too, only ate at Tribute once. I never returned because--for lunch, anyway--the food was mediocre and the prices high. They were serving diner food at double the price of a diner. There are now too many options for dining in the South Loop for mediocre to last.
