The new tree (photo by Bonnie McGrath)

Back in July, we lost the latest tree in a string of knocked down trees in front of my house through the years. And this time, I thought it might be better to just live forever without one--rather than go through another loss. It just seems like trees at Roosevelt and State attract errant drivers like mad. Every time the tree at that spot starts to mature, a car knocks it down. It's very sad.

In any case, one of Alderman Fioretti's online newsletters came out several weeks back, and in small print somewhere in the text, there was an email address to write if you were in need of a tree. The alderman explained there were plenty to go round. So I took another chance at love, and emailed for yet another new tree. I got no response and I figured that's just as well. We can live without.

But lo and behold, returning home on Wednesday, prepared to hunker down for the long Thanksgiving weekend, I noticed something special in front of the house. A new tree, small and spindly, with plenty of mulch around it, had actually been planted. Something to be thankful for, for sure. A new life with great potential.

So it looks like it's time for another go round with nature and those who tend to fight it. Will the life of this little treeling be cut short like all the rest? Or will this one live to a ripe old arbor age?

Only time will tell.
