Seems as though a lot of people are wondering when the next big Dearborn Park community garage sale--held every year in Dearborn Park--will be. The sad thing is that its biggest organizer, beloved neighborhood resident Mary Schoonmaker, passed away several months ago. She is memorialized, by the way, across from the park with a plaque on her favorite neighborhood resting spot. But others in the community always helped plan and execute the popular event. And I suspect it will come off sometime soon. Here's hoping.
In the meantime, my neighbors are organizing another good one in our very own South Loop alley, with an entry point at Plymouth and the viaduct at Roosevelt across from the South Loop School. It's next Saturday, August 20. From 9 AM till 3 PM. I never try to sell any of my own stuff (although I should) but I love to buy my neighbors' wares. I have lots of perfectly wonderful stuff peppering my house and yard that my neighbors didn't want anymore. And it was all VERY reasonably priced.
In the meantime, for those of you who are awaiting the big Dearborn Park sale at 9th and Plymouth, for those of you who love good garage sales, for those of you who love to snoop a bit, come on down to Roosevelt and State (alley entry on Plymouth) on Saturday. Tell your friends, relatives and neighbors, too. Peaking inside our two-car garages is always fun. Seeing our alley garden from the inside is also a pretty good thrill. So is meeting and chatting with the residents of the Chicago Homes of Dearborn Park, nice people who live in 36 nice houses in the heart of the South Loop. Come on down!
