Once again, friends in Pilsen have asked me to promote their Big Day: Pilsen Paseo de Jardines. It's time for the 2nd Annual Pilsen Garden Walk. Like last year, the Pilsen Paseo--which means a nice, idle and leisurely stroll--is going to be GREAT.

The walk is free, although small donations are encouraged. It runs from 10 AM till 3 PM next Saturday, August 6.

Here is all the information, straight from the garden aficionados in Pilsen:

Please join us for Pilsen's 2nd Annual Neighborhood Garden Tour! Over 40 gardens are participating highlighting many different spaces and styles of gardening including community gardens, edible rooftop gardens, butterfly gardens, backyard gardens, porch gardens, and even sidewalk gardens. Family activities, educational presentations and demonstrations will be held along the entire route.

Visitors can stop by the neighborhood’s community gardens and learn how to make garden planters from up-cycled materials, help make a greenhouse from plastic bottles, learn how to set up a compost bin in your backyard or a worm bin in your kitchen, or hear a presentation on monarch butterflies. You can pick up a map detailing suggested routes and a list of activities along the way!

The tour will encompass Pilsen’s gardening community between 18th St and Cermak from Sangamon to Leavitt. Tour officially begins at El Zocalo Plaza at 1818 South Paulina, where there will be informational handouts and ongoing activities. We encourage guests to walk or bike the route and bicycle rentals will be available for a small donation at El Zocalo Plaza.

Pilsen can also be reached via CTA Pink Line (18th or Damen stops) and CTA Buses #8 (Halsted,) #9 (Ashland,) #18 (18th Street,) #21 (Cermak).

Maps will be available at the following locations...
· Jardin Mariposa (1835-1837 S Carpenter)
· Roots & Rays Community Garden (1513-1521 W Cullerton)
· St. Ann's Plaza & the BLAGI Project (2147 West 18th Place)
· Growing Station (21st & Sangamon)
· Eco Rooftop Garden (2042 W 21st Street)
· Orozco School Garden (18th & Damen)
· Xochiquetzal (23rd & Wolcott)

This event is hosted by the Pilsen Alianza Verde, a coalition of the community gardens: Jardin Mariposa, Roots & Rays Community Garden, St. Ann's Plaza & the BLAGI Project, Growing Station, Eco Rooftop Garden, and the Xochiquetzal Peace Garden. With generous support from the Pilsen Planning Committee’s Community Image Task Force, The Resurrection Project, Working Bikes Chicago, Elev8, Openlands, Orozco School, Whittier School and the Pilsen Community Market.
