Think cold

a way to cool off?

Looking into my backyard circa the blizzard... (photo by Bonnie McGrath)

So you're hot and can't get relief. Lots of people in the South Loop are feeling the same way. Channel 2 reports that the ice cream shop--Marble Slab Creamery--at 1241 S. Michigan (an address at which my dad, in the late 1940s and early 1950s, once had a bicycle business called the Cycle Transport Company) is doing record business. And that's good for a business that's seasonal--and to which no one goes if the temperature drops below 80 degrees.

There are the usual human heat-inspired upsets in the neighborhood lately, too. Like one neighbor (on crutches yet!) getting hot under the collar and trying to shoot another (it happened at 21st and Michigan in the building parking lot); and bar scuffles that may be set off by too much sweat. (Like the one at Reggie's Rock Club at 21st and State.)

My remedy to cool off? Why not read my blog post from February--just after our historic blizzard. In it, I link to pictures, stories and video from around the neighborhood--and they are filled with huge amounts of snow and colder than cold howling winds.

Then, if you need to warm up again, I recommend something warm (and fuzzy)--like a story about a neighborhood organization giving out dorm life survival packs to college-bound students who are of very modest means.

Just call me the temperature-controller.

Ok, since you mentioned it. If readers get too cold thinking about the blizzard of 2011, here are my two posts about hot chocolate--the quest for the perfect cup. (next winter, i will do a third follow-up.) 1) http://www.chicagonow.com/sugar-buzz-chicago/2011/02/a-hot-chocolate-investigation-worthy-of-60-minutes/ and 2) http://www.chicagonow.com/sugar-buzz-chicago/2011/03/search-for-the-perfect-cup-of-hot-chocolate-part-ii/
