Have you walked on the west side of Wabash lately, just north of Roosevelt and just after dusk? Lots of company, huh? A bevy of rats runs back and forth from the lot next to the new and as yet unopened Five Guys, out to the street and back again. You can hear people freaking out and running in the other direction.
Exactly what has brought this profusion, I do not know. But there are more rats in a minute and in a few square feet there than I have seen in the whole 18 years I've lived in the neighborhood. And I've seen more than a few during that time.
When I tell you roosevelt and Wabash is infested in that small footprint, I'm not exaggerating. Whenever I forget and start to approach the area, I see the critters and I cross over to the side with Trader Joe's. So I don't freak out.
Today, about noon, I walked past and there were three beefy guys in front of the impending Five Guys. I don't know who they were working for at that location, of if they were even working, or what they were doing there. But they had the sound of gloom and doom in their voices--and I overheard them say "lots of holes," and "three dead rat carcasses."
I turned and looked into the parkway planter and I saw the holes. And then I saw a very stiff and furry dead rat. And then I sped up and got away so I wouldn't see the other two.
I didn't take a picture out of respect for readers--and the dead rats. But there's a big problem there, whoever is in charge. If something isn't done, and potential Five Guys eaters get wind of this adjacent infestation, there's apt to be a deceased restaurant. And that would be a shame after all the Five Guys anticipation.

Freaking out is appropriate. Has anyone called the Pied Piper of Hamlin? Better yet, how about the city's pest control?
