Dearborn Parkers may be wondering why surveyors have descended on the neighborhood in recent days, flipping their equipment around haughtily--as though some developer was out to level the neighborhood and build something altogether new.

It doesn't appear that that's going to be the case, however. While they do seem to be roaming along on State and Plymouth and thereabouts like there was no tomorrow, day after day--this week and last--marking mysterious numbers and letters down on the sidewalks in pink, they told me this morning they are on a mission for ComEd.

"ComEd wants to do some upgrading, some insulating" one of the surveyors told me.

"Will they be tearing up all the sidewalks?" I asked.

"No," said the surveyor. "They try to keep all their work in the street."

"How come your markings are on the sidewalk then?" I asked.

"That's just how we do things," he answered.

I really hope ComEd doesn't tear up S State St. The City just resurfaced it from Roosevelt to 18th St last year! It really needed it as the last utility to tear it up did a poor job repairing the pavement cuts.

"That's just the way we do it," seems to be a common refrain when it comes to the city. Gotta love it.
