We have a true academic nerd in the neighborhood. Right here in our own backyard, Jones College Prep has earned more academic honors from the Illinois State Board of Education than any other public school in the state, according to the Chicago Tribune. Since 2003, it's gotten 14 nods for great academic performance and is number one on the state's honor roll.

Students who want to get in compete for spots in the magnet school like crazy. So let's hope that when a larger school is built in the next few years, all of our kids in the South Loop can get in if they want to. If that happens, Jones should get yet another award. For making families in the neighborhood happy!

To bad the Jones Board and school are working quietly to keep the local Near South families out of the school by not fully backing recommendations for more intensive neighborhood allotments. Message, your good enough for us to take your $100MM of TIF money, but not to create more neighborhood dedicated seats. 75 kids per grade year on a 3 mile radius? Near South Residents will be lucky to get 5 kids a year in the school automatically.

The community can be very proud to have Jones as our public High School. We could use more good public schools.
