Blackie's

A few South Loopers were sitting around over the weekend and one of them asked what each of them felt was the most underappreciated spot in their neighborhood. The following list is what came of out of that question. Do you agree? Or do you have others you want to add to the list?

--The wilds of what's left of the railroad yards

--The roof of the 899 South Plymouth Building--mainly because it's impossible to get up there

--The prairie behind the "old Meigs Field."

--The Monroe Harbor area

--Sandmeyer's Bookstore on Printers Row

--Sandmeyer's Bookstore on Printers Row again

--Blackie's restaurant at Polk and Clark

--The Roosevelt Playlot in the "valley" at Clark and Roosevelt (northeast corner)

--Harold Washington Library

--Kroll's Sports Bar at 18th and Michigan

--The landscaping at the Federal Square townhome complex in the "valley" at Clark and Roosevelt (southeast corner)

Why is in unappreciated, it looks like it is very nice for me. People really varies on their taste and preferences. - Brenda Lee Reed

Thanks for the comment, Sloopy. I really enjoyed, by the way, your run-down of Buddy Guy's early January performance at his Printers Row venue. Readers shouldn't miss it. Here's the link: http://www.sloopin.com/2010/01/buddy-guy-legend-performs-at-legends.html

Not really sure if this is under appreciated, but I still don't think it gets the credit it deserves... Buddy Guy's Legends

it had a lot of "nature" on it a few years ago before the people who took it off rezko's hands chopped it all away. before that, it felt like a nature preserve in wisconsin or something. i am glad to see the nature is growing back.

Bonnie: Nice list. I'm not sure if it's underappreciated, but I'd add the empty 62-acres at the southwest corner of Clark and Roosevelt -- the parcel sometimes called the "Rezko property" or some variation thereof, because the land was once own by that infamous real estate/political wheeler and dealer. I think it's a pretty cool place for hiking. I like seeing how nature slowly grows back. I don't think the land will be empty for forever, of course ...
