Subway Snags Prime Corner at Roosevelt & Michigan
Do We Really Love Subway That Much?

I heard rumors that a high-end sports bar was looking to open shop at
the corner of Roosevelt & Michigan. Imagine my surprise when I saw a
new Subway sandwich shop open up instead. Really? Another Subway? Such prime real estate for a neighborhood craving more independent shops and establishments. I imagined a "Frenchie" sort of cafe or perhaps a place that served fresh pizzas from an authentic Italian pizza oven. A large corner retail unit and the best option for a lease was Subway.
Hey, I do enjoy my share of Subway sandwiches, but with another retail location nearby on Wabash, I was disappointed to see this addition to the South Loop. Perhaps it's the fact that I just returned from Montreal - a city that balances franchises with unique cafes and restaurants in ever part of the city.
I don't know the parameters around the Subway deal, but I'd hope the West and South Loop make more room for the independent entrepreneur.
