First hearing on CPS admission changes Sat.

Chicago Public Schools announced major changes to admissions prodcedures at CPS magnet schools and those with selective enrollment programs Tuesday. The first of six public hearings about the new procedures will be held Saturday on the Near West Side, at Andrew Jackson School.

End of the road for YWCA building

The YWCA building at 830 S. Michigan will be demolished, leaving a gap in the Michigan Boulevard streetwall. The building's facade will not be saved, a lawyer for the building's owner said in Cook County Circuit Court this morning.

Davis leaving county board president race

Women's Park sale, medical district buying land

The city will sell the South Loop's Women's Park to the Chicago Park District, according to the November Community Development Commission agenda. The Illinois Medical District is purchasing land from the city at Hastings and Paulina, the agenda says.

The deadline for filing signatures to be on the Feb. 2, 2010 ballot for the 7th District Congressional seat was yesterday, and 13 candidates from three political parties have tossed their hat in the ring.

Seeking tips on hit and run

Martha Gonzalez, 36, was hit by a car at 18th and Halsted and killed shortly after 5 p.m. on Oct. 13. Friends and family of Gonzalez are raising funds for anyone who offers information leading to the driver, who sped away after the incident. Read more...
Plea references South Loop's biggest vacant parcel

Alonzo "Lou" Monk, once an advisor to indicted ex-governor Rod Blagojevich, discussed the the vacant 62-acre parcel at the southwest corner of Roosevelt and Clark, according to his plea deal. Monk has pleaded guilty.
