Bouncers from Buddy Guy's Legends and George's Lounge pose after their tug-of-war across Wabash Avenue Saturday night.

Buddy Guy’s Legends and George’s Lounge, two neighboring bars on opposite sides of Wabash Avenue in the South Loop, faced off with a tug of war Saturday night across the street.

The idea was formed when a bouncer at George’s did an airplane-pulling contest at O’Hare to benefit Special Olympics, and Buddy Guy’s bouncers boasted they could do it, too. They decided to show down in a tug of war, and they raised a couple of hundred dollars for Special Olympics themselves in promoting the event, George’s owner Robert Skahill said.

Buddy Guy’s ended up winning the event — maybe because they were allowed four employees to George’s two. Overall, Skahill said the event was a success, and they’re hoping to expand it next year.

“Export Gym, The Scout — everybody’s got a couple of big, tough guys who’ll want to get in on this,” Skahill said.
