Here's what I've been following in the Chicago news media this afternoon, following Chicago Journal's noon deadline today:

  • The City of Chicago has started demolition of the Reese campus, once eyed for the defunct Olympic Village. At least one building designed by Bauhaus founder Walter Gropius is going down, reports WBEZ. Past Chicago Journal coverage on the issue here and here. The Save Michael Reese coalition is calling the demolition "a disaster."
  • A new report from the Consortium for Chicago School Research says Chicago Public School students whose elementary schools were closed between 2001-2006 saw no uptick in achievement. The reason? They were later sent to some of the city's worst schools, the Tribune reports. Among the Near West Side elementary schools closed during this time period: Jefferson, Riis and Spaulding. Shuttered after the consortium's study period: Gladstone, Nia, Foundations, Medill. And in Pilsen, De La Cruz.
  • Hotel workers at the five hotels downtown -- the Sheraton, the Westin Michigan Avenue, the W Chicago-Lakeshore, W Chicago-City Center and the Tremont -- are taking a strike vote this afternoon. Note that the major South Loop hotels are not included in this list. Past coverage from Chicago Journal here.
