Martha Gonzalez, 36, was hit by a car at 18th and Halsted
and killed shortly after 5 p.m. on Oct. 13. Friends and family of Gonzalez are raising funds for anyone
who offers information leading to the driver, who sped away after the incident.
According to Antonia Lopez, a friend since high school, Gonzalez was on her way to see her husband the afternoon of the hit and run. She said Gonzalez, a married mother of two, was an outgoing presence and dedicated to her close-knit family.
Lopez, along with friends and family, have established a Web site -- http://www.marthagonzalezmemorial.com -- to memorialize Gonzalez and raise money. The group ultimately hopes to offer a $5,000 reward.
A police spokesman said the the vehicle that killed Gonzalez was either medium blue or aqua colored, and was traveling northbound on Halsted when it struck her.
Tomorrow, friends and family of the victim will gather at Kristoffer's Cafe and Bakery, 1733 S. Halsted, to announce the reward money and call attention to the 18th and Halsted intersection, which Lopez called "notoriously dangerous."
The event, a press conference, is scheduled to begin at 5 p.m.
