Roosevelt Collection to demolish empty retail
Report: green space replace vacant buildings

The new owners of South Loop development Roosevelt Collection have decided to demolish a big chunk of the vacant retail space in the complex, according to a new report.
The partnership between McCaffery Interests Inc. and another group that includes former NBA star Magic Johnson bought the complex at a steep discount earlier this year. A report from Crain’s Chicago Business said the group is planning to raze a vacant block of retail buildings that sits in the middle of the U-shaped complex.
They’ll replace it with a park and green space, according to the Crain’s story.
Currently, the only tenant in the retail space at Roosevelt Collection is the Kerasotes Showplace Icon movie theater.

While green is well and good and I appreciate the thought, the building is already there. Push to fill it with something that will drive business for the area.

No one is going to use that green space. I think a triathlon-focused store would do well in that space. Running, biking, swimming gear and workshops. It would be a destination for athletes visiting Grant Park and a much-needed resource for the immediate area.

this could be such a great retail destination for not just the south loop, but many surrounding neighborhoods

I was just there last night to see "Attack the Block" and was looking at all that empty space. What's happening with the sale of the lot to the west? As additional residential and retail is developed in that area, those spaces would become viable. I hope that the walls/roofs are removed in such a way that they can be put back when demand increases in the area.

Creating more green space is a great way to attract people... it is nice to see that someone within the new ownership has thoughful ideas
