Cops nab 3 in Near West bus robberies by mob
Two charged as adults, one as juvenile
06/09/2011 7:16 PM
Three teens have been arrested in one of the two bus robberies that happened in University Village this weekend.
In the original crimes, police said eight to 15 teens rushed onto two CTA buses without paying around midnight between Saturday and Sunday, beating up riders and stealing electronics from them. One incident happened at 13th Street at Racine Avenue around 11:40 p.m. Saturday; the second happened at Loomis and Roosevelt around 12:05 a.m. Sunday.
Akeem J. Manago, 18, Christopher Jackson, 17, and a 15-year-old boy were arrested for the incident on Roosevelt and charged with felonies of aggravated battery in a public place and armed robbery. Manago was also charged with felony unlawful use of a weapon and misdemeanor possession of a gun and ammo without registration.
Manago and Jackson were scheduled to appear in bond court on Thursday, June 9.
In a news release announcing their arrest, the Chicago Police Department said the investigation was ongoing.
The arrests are symptomatic of a larger problem in the city, as mobs of teenagers have been swarming victims around the city's downtown, battering them and stealing cash and electronics.
The Chicago Tribune reported Wednesday that police superintendent Garry McCarthy and Mayor Rahm Emanuel had laid out a plan to deal with the mobs.
