A Pilsen charter school teacher was one of 10 teachers to take home one of Illinois’ most illustrious teaching awards this Tuesday, the Golden Apple.

Judy Choi, a fourth grade teacher at Bartolome de Las Casas Charter School at 1641 W. 16th St. in Pilsen, was surprised in her classroom on Tuesday by her boss, family, ABC 7 TV reporters and Golden Apple officials who presented her with the award.

“She provides the school with an institutional memory and is noted for her caring, high expectation teaching style,” a Golden Apple press release said. “She feels her purpose at Bartolome is to challenge herself to make each child she teaches confident and self-motivated. She bases her personal success on the long-term growth of her individual students.”

Choi was selected from a pool of more than 600 nominees for the award. She’ll receive a $3,000 cash award, and a tuition-free spring sabbatical to study at Northwestern University.

Golden Apple has been presenting the awards since 1986.
