A police officer from one of the department's specialized units fired his weapon at an offender who pulled out a gun during a traffic stop last night at 8:20 p.m. in the 1400 block of S. Michigan, a prominent South Loop commerical strip.
The offender was not struck, said Officer Robert Perez, a spokesman for the police department, and he did escape from the scene.
Perez did not have the make or model of the offender's vehicle nor a physical description of him.
Area 3 detectives and the Independent Police Review Authority staff are investigating the situation.
Perez did not know which specialized units the officers involved in last night's shooting were from, but said the individual in the vehicle was known to police.
"They knew who they were looking for," Perez said. "They were looking for this individual."
On the Near West Side, meanwhile, last night a man walked into the University of Illinois Hospital saying he had been shot multiple times in the 1600 block of S. Ashland last night around 9:20 p.m., according to the police department's major incidents log.
The victim was transferred to Stroger Hospital. Area 4 detectives are investigating.
