Candidates seeking seats on the South Loop Elementary and Jones College Prep local school councils will discuss why they're running on March 23, at forums scheduled to begin at 6 p.m.
This year's local school council election comes as major changes loom for both institutions.
Late last year and into 2010, South Loop School council members discussed the pros and cons of moving the school's upper grades to empty classrooms in the National Teachers Academy building, 55 W. Cermak, to make more space for a growing student body.
Jones is preparing to move into a new building slated for the vacant land immediately south of their current facility.
Chicago Public Schools, meanwhile, is facing a budget deficit that could lead the district to reduce spending by $700 million, increasing class sizes, laying off teachers and central office staff. Cuts to individual schools haven't been announced yet, but principals are already starting to plan for them.
South Loop is located at 1212 S. Plymouth, Jones at 606 S. State. LSC election day for elementary schools is April 21 with high school councils election the following day, according to CPS.
