Election 2012: Smith, Mitchell, Van Pelt Watkins take home Democratic nods

With most of the votes tallied, we have a few clear winners in Tuesday's primary election.


Indicted 10th District state Rep. Derrick Smith trounced his opponent Tom Swiss in a landslide, despite charges of bribery; Christian Mitchell beat his opponent. Kenny Johnson, in the race for the vacant 26th District state rep seat; and Patricia Van Pelt Watkins defeated 10th District state Sen. Annazette Collins.

Here are the vote totals as of 11:56 p.m. Tuesday, March 20.

10th District Illinois House (125 of 128 precincts reporting)
Derrick Smith 76.65%
Tom Swiss 23.35%

26th District Illinois House (130 of 131 precincts reporting)
Christian Mitchell 52.05%
Kenny Johnson 47.95%

5th District Illinois Senate (220 of 223 precincts reporting)
Patricia Van Pelt Watkins 53.73%
Annazette Collins 46.27%
