Several polling places in neighborhoods around the Loop have seen low turnout through the early afternoon, election judges and poll workers said.
Charlie Wintersteen, an election judge with Jesus "Chuy" Garcia's campaign, stopped at the Providence of God Catholic Church at 717 W. 18th St. in Pilsen, a little before 2 p.m. this afternoon to take a count. Poll workers told him that just 36 out of 438 registered voters in the area had cast ballots.
"This seems a little low," he said.
Every polling place visited by Chicago Journal this primary day - from the William Jones Apartments, 1447 S. Ashland to Grace Episcopal Church at 637 S. Dearborn, was nearly empty, with plenty of voting machines at the ready and poll workers ready for when the rare voter arrived.
A election judge at Grace Church, Trudy Holt, said she expected a post-workday rush to materialize, starting around 5:30 p.m.
