Moving the dog tags
it's expensive and a contribution would be appreciated
12/19/2011 12:14 PM
Shortly after I broke the news that the National Veterans Art Museum would be leaving their long time home in the neighborhood at 18th and Indiana--a building which is now a Chicago Park District field house--for new digs in River East, the news became public, and plans for moving are being put into motion.
One of the most challenging tranports will be moving the 58,000 dog tags currently hanging on the ceiling of the building's lobby, an installation called ABOVE and BEYOND. Each dog tag will have to be removed individually and reinstalled on the other end. According to the museum, this artwork is the only permanent art exhibit/war memorial dedicated to the thousands of service members who died in Viet Nam--other than "The Wall" in Washington, DC.
NVAM is asking for a $10 donation for each tag to be moved in your name or in honor or memory of another individual.
Sounds like the right thing to do and the right time to do it.

If 1000 people would give $58 we could do it! Let's start collecting contributions. It is a great cause and a small price. Plus do those soldiers deserve it? Of course, so lets start collecting Bonnie. I write the first check.
