Bringing children hope for the holidays

My column on the holiday spirit spurred some emails and comments from friends. I was reminded that every year in the West Loop, the 1000 W. Washington condo building has a gift drive. Residents purchase the gifts and a committee of residents volunteer to wrap them before making their donation.
Two active Fulton River District residents are involved with a national charity called Dreams for Kids. Darren Coady and Larry Gage are currently working on the annual “Holiday for Hope” event. It takes place this Saturday at the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers (IBEW) 150 hall, another great neighbor to our community.
If you are looking to make a charitable donation, Darren says $20 will pay for one homeless or underprivileged child to experience a day of food, music, magic, games, gifts and Santa. They have plenty of volunteers, but apparently funds are a bit lower this year. Here’s the link to donate: http://dreamsforkids.org/ways-to-help/donate/
And it looks as if the West Loop Community Organization coat drive went well. A shout out to the 950 W. Monroe building for pulling together so many donations. I went by right before the pick up, and half the lobby was full. The drive technically ended yesterday, but hopefully Martha or Laura can weigh in on how much longer they are collecting, or where they suggest future donations be sent.
