Panozzo's gets some doting attention on the Food Network

even though it's not a diner, drive-in or dive

Rushed home from my book club ronight on Printers Row (the book was "Lafayette") so I could catch the latest episode of Diners, Drive-ins and Dives on the Food Network. The show where food man Guy Fieri bops around in that flashy red convertible eating himself silly around the country.


Why did I rush home to watch a show I'm not in the habit of watching?

Because tonight the show showcased our very own Panozzo's italian market. It was the episode I talked about back in March, when the red car was spotted in the neighborhood while Guy was in the kitchen testing and taping the food. Before the taping, Panozzo's had no chairs--and you had to take your food outside, to the car or back home. But during the taping, chairs and tables were added giving us neighbors a place to sit. Finally.

Guy watches the preparation of two sandwiches in the Panozzo's segment: a complex porchetta--from the rubbing of the meat to the sauteeing of the bread--and a huge meatball number with far more flavors incorporated than I would have ever imagined. Watching the few minutes' worth of food prepping at Panozzo's was a true gastronomic education that I never could have gotten anywhere else.

It all went too fast for me to jot down the recipes. But Guy announced at the end of the show that the recipes would be on the Food Network website. But I couldn't find them anywhere. Better yet, just go on over to 13th and Michigan and try both the sandwiches. But not at the same time. Only a guy like Guy can do that.

to keep it in perspective: I went to a small Highwood Italian restaurant last night and ordered lasagna + small caesar. I got what looked like LESS than half portion of over- al dente, or maybe yesterday's, lasagna, and a very unprepossessing so-called caesar salad. No beverage. What did this meal cost me? $24. Noodles and sauce.
