The South Loop has one more thing to be proud of: In its listing of 83 "Bests" of Chicago, Chicago Magazine has named our very own local friend, neighbor and erstwhile emailer Enrique Perez the Best Citizen. Considering a city like Chicago, which has many good samaritans, do-gooders and other various nice people, this is quite a feat of recognition.

The mag says Enrique "has built up a trusting and politically active base in the South Loop through an email newsletter." To get on his 2,000 person email list, which has been going for almost four years and which communicates just about every bit of news, pending meeting and underlying controversy in the neighborhood, just write him at perezeg@aol.com

"I could write a whole book on how this honor came to be," Enrique told me. He says he is grateful to his newsletter readers--of which I am one--who have gotten involved in the various community issues he has written about. Enrique says that his readers' continued involvement in the community will "ultimately make all the difference."

Seriously? The guy who paid junkies and winos to come to the South Loop School to vote for him for an LSC seat? Good grief. And have you actually talked to Mr. Perez? That's the best of the South Loop, per Chicago magzine. Must be parody. Or.... God help that neighborhood.

Remember when Enrique paid the residents of the New Ritz Hotel SRO to vote for him in the South Loop School LSC election? That didn't disqualify him as "Best" Citizen? http://articles.chicagotribune.com/2006-06-03/news/0606030225_1_new-election-council-results

Thanks for posting this Bonnie! I love that Enrique was recognized for his efforts. The South Loop is lucky to have him.
