Poetry Party
happens every year in the heart of the South Loop

The Book Club came over last night for our annual poetry reading night on my deck. We had my famous barbecued chicken with many trimmings/sides and lots of wine. The weather was perfect and this morning I am getting emails attesting to my ability to conjure up air at Roosevelt and State that was sent to us from the Gods; that is, after the bees disappeared when the sun went down. But one of the book club members did remember to bring two big citronella buckets, which she lit in homage to full perfection.
In any case, in honor of the beauty of the night, I thought I would mention who we read aloud: Dorothy Parker, Carl Sandburg, Ogden Nash, Eve Merriam, Edgar Guest, Judith Viorst, Sojourner Truth, Marianne Moore, our new US Poet Laureate W. S. Merwin--as well as an unknown 16-year-old who wrote a poem as part of a reform school program (it was one of the best).
In the meantime, I asked my fellow clubbers how poets can make money today, what with all their work being online. "They teach," said Donna. That was a good enough answer for me.

Ms. B: What a perfect poetic parliament! FYI--the Caxton Club is hosting a Sept. lunch with the Algonquin Roundtable on the lecture menu.
