To market to market
but no fat pigs for sale

After all the publicity that the brand new famers market at the Wheeler Mansion, a boutique hotel on South Calumet got of late, I wouldn't have thought of being anywhere else late Wednesday afternoon. Absolutely nowhere other than in the Prairie District. And I'm not going to think about being much of anywhere else late afternoon on Wednesdays until October.
Wow! Everything was for sale--from Bridgeport's Pleasant House Bakery signature savory pies to novels about Prairie Avenue back in the heyday. There were strawberries and tomatoes and an array of mushrooms like shiitake, cremini and oyster. There were all kinds of sweets and bakery products and even some jewelry. There was wine from Illinois vineyards--and it was good.
Everyone was there and you could run into neighbors galore. There were petitions going around to save the old Jones high school building and use it for a neighborhood high school when the new Jones College Prep magnet is done. The idea is that the millions that would be spent to tear it down would be a lot better spent renovating it. Lots of neighbors were signing.
My friend Anita and I decided we would be coming back for a pot pie and a glass of wine next week. There are going to be merry Wednesdays in the South Loop this summer, I predict.

Making the old Jones into a neighborhood high school? The new hs is supposed to have a neighborhood component and it is a bad idea to put two high schools next to each other. Bad business.

Sorry about that. The market is being put on by the Prairie District Neighborhood Alliance.
