A stretch of Blue Island Avenue through the heart of Pilsen is set to get a makeover, according staff for Ald. Danny Solis (25th).
It started Wednesday with Plaza Tenochtitlan on the south side of Blue Island and 18th Street, where local real estate mogul Joseph Cacciatore is adopting the planters and having his landscaping team come in to spruce them up.
Then, this summer, a team led by the Chicago Public Art Group and Pilsen-based artist Hector Duarte will work on new designs for the plazaís planters, coming up with plans to cover the concrete with a mixed-media mural.
Duarte will work with the Yollocalli Youth Arts Reach program to come up with a design that will make the plaza more colorful, using broken pieces of colorful glass and ceramic.
Solis is also looking for funding to build a new streetscape on Blue Island from 19th to 21st streets that will continue the work thatís been done further south on Blue Island and along Cermak Road. Solis wants to create a new protected bike lane that will run from Roosevelt Road to Cermak on Blue Island as well.
